Rules
The basics (see below for additional rules for the adventure race option)
§ On the day of the event, you will receive:
Ø Maps of Vancouver: a large scale map of the overall area and detailed maps.
Ø A checkpoint description sheet listing 100 checkpoints.
§ Magenta circles on the maps show the locations of the checkpoints. Your task will be to walk or run to as many of these checkpoints as you can and return to the start/finish area without going over the time limit.
§ When you find a checkpoint, you answer a question on your checkpoint description sheet about that location. Local residents won’t have an advantage. For example, few next-door neighbors will be able to answer, “How many trees are located on the SW corner of this intersection?” Don’t guess; incorrect answers will be subtracted from your score. If you did this event last year, don't try to remember your answers from last year. Some of the checkpoints will be the same, but we will have staff at a few of them to make sure you actually go there. On others, we'll attach a sign telling you to mark a different answer.
§ The checkpoint are numbered. The value of the checkpoint is equal to its number rounded down to the nearest 10. For example, Control No. 73 is worth 70 points; Control No. 13 is worth 10 points. Whoever gets the most points will get bragging rights as the top finisher in their class. (Experienced orienteers will recognize this is the same as the scoring in a Rogaine, the endurance form of orienteering.)
§ You will get your maps before the start so that you have time to plan your route. You may go to any of the checkpoints in any order you like. Plan your best route based on your ability.
§ When it's time to take off, do the best you can, and return to the Start/Finish area before time expires.
§ Remember to:
Ø Obey traffic laws.
Ø Respect private property, cemeteries, and areas marked out of bounds on the map. Stay on the sidewalks, trails, parks, and school district property. You do not need to leave public property to answer the question about any checkpoint.
Ø Be kind to the plant life. On Clark College campus, please stay on the pavement.
Ø Wear your competitor number. This is required by the Vancouver Police Department.
Penalties
§ Team members must stay together. Several of the control points will be staffed. Each member of the team must sign in at these points. If you or a team member does not sign in, you or your team will be disqualified.
§ You will be penalized if you are over the time limit. For the two-hour and four-hour events, the penalty will be that your score will be counted in the next longer event. For example, if you arrive at the finish 2 hours and 61 seconds after the start, your score will be ranked among the four-hour competitors.
Those who return after six hours will be penalized 10 points for each minute late. For example, if you arrive at the finish 6 hours, 12 minutes and 37 seconds after the start, 120 points will be subtracted from your score. You will lose all points if you are 30 minutes late.
§ If you do not return to the Start/Finish and turn in your completed checkpoint description sheet, you will not be eligible for draw prizes.
